I've just finished the book. All the way through I was imagining Gwyneth Paltrow as the pony-tailed Patty, a young William H. Macy as Walter, and Jeff Goldblum as Richard.
Couldn't picture Connie while reading book, but Christina Ricci is perfect...

William H. Macy as Walter? Hmmm... Sounds good. I had pictured Tom Hanks in the role, but he's too "cute", perhaps.
Definitely NOT Richard Dreyfuss: Walter is a tall Scandinavian!
I agree that Jeff Goldblum would be a credible Richard. Josh Hartnett as Joey is possible, but why not Ryan Gosling, with his sarcastic smirk?
I LOVE Christina Ricci as Connie: perfect!
BUT... for me Patty can only be Uma Thurman. I had previously thought of Julia Roberts (too dark) or Charlize Theron (not enough American). UMA for Patty!

Second thoughts: What about Tim Robbins or Sean Penn as Walter? And Jennifer Lawrence as Jessica Berglund? And Sarah Jessica Parker as Patty's confrontational middle sister?
